International yoga day:

As we all know, Yoga deals with physical exercises, called Asanas, which entails the assuming of well defined poses, with precise results. Pranayama, or control of breathing, is combined with these. The asanas involve static positions and a particular pose is supposed to be held for a prescribed duration of time. During this time, the mind is also disciplined, as it concentrates on the particular parts of the body, or on breath. Yoga, therefore, revitalises both body and mind. It helps to calm the mind and induce relaxation. In other words, it also helps in reducing stress.

Thus, the practice of yoga actually helps in dealing with skin problems that are triggered by stress, like acne. Apart from stress, hormonal changes and a congested system can both stimulate the oil-producing glands of the skin, leading to acne. Asanas for acne help to reduce stress and also keep the  system flushed, getting rid of toxins and wastes. They also help to bring about hormonal balance.

The following Asanas would help control acne:

Uttanasana -This is a standing and forward bending pose, in which the body is fully bent, with hands holding the ankles. If there is a back problem, the ‘ardha uttasana’ i.e. half bending pose can be followed. Apart from other benefits, it helps to reduce fatigue and stress. It also calms the mind and soothes the nerves. It improves blood circulation to the face, head and neck.

Kapalbhati – A breathing exercise, it is also said to help an acne condition. In this, the exhaling of breath is done with a little force. It is said to help remove carbon dioxide and thus purify the blood. This also helps to decongest the system.

Dhanurasana – This posture resembles a bow. It is excellent for removing toxins and flushing the system. It also promotes blood circulation and reduces stress. It benefits the skin, making it clear and adding a glow. Therefore, it can help to control an acne condition.

It is said that after Yoga, one should drink plenty of water and rest the body. That is why Shavasana is done at the end. It is also called ‘the corpse pose’ where one lies with eyes closed and body totally relaxed. The mind is fully conscious, but relaxed. This posture can last for 10 to 20 minutes. It is ideal for eliminating stress and calming the mind. It is said to relieve fatigue, headache, depression, help hypertension and calm the nervous system.

Face Pack: After washing the face, apply a face pack to soothe and calm the skin. The ingredients that may be used in such a pack are aloe vera, rose water, green tea, chamomile tea, honey and oatmeal. If the skin is oily, fuller’s earth may be used. Take 4 teaspoons oats and mix one teaspoon each of aloe vera, rose water, green tea OR chamomile tea and honey. Mix together and apply on the face, avoiding the lips and area around eyes. It may be applied on the neck too. Wash it off after 20 to 30 minutes.
